From the Treeline: SAFEgaiter in Drone Operations

One product, many missions. In this field report, a Danish drone operator wore SAFEgaiter for ten days straight during a field exercise, using it for camouflage and as a dust mask.
SAFEgaiter was designed to protect the soldier’s face and airways. But the more units test it, the more roles we see it take on. Drone operations is one of the many examples.
Ten days, almost without taking it off
We met the operator at DALO, where he took a SAFEgaiter with him to test on an upcoming drone exercise. When his unit arrived, they were told that masking up was a priority. So the SAFEgaiter stayed on for most of the next ten days.

For a drone team, staying unseen is part of the job. Operators often work from a fixed position for long periods, focused on a screen, while their signature is the thing most likely to give them away. A face covering that can be worn comfortably for days, not hours, matters.
Camouflage outdoors, dust protection indoors
SAFEgaiter worn under a ghillie hood. The operator used it as part of his camouflage for ten days straight.
The operator used SAFEgaiter in two roles during the same exercise. In the field, it covered his face as part of his camouflage. Inside, it worked as a respiratory protection gaiter.

He found it most useful where dust was a problem. Drone teams increasingly set up in abandoned or damaged buildings for cover, so this is a realistic scenario, not a corner case. One piece of kit covered both needs, with no need to switch between a scarf and a separate mask.
He also followed the fitting advice from DALO: adjusting the nose clip and tightening the fit at the back of the neck.
What we learned
The one drawback he reported was fogging of glasses when exhaling. This happened when his heart rate and activity level were very high. A correctly adjusted nose clip can reduce fogging, and it is a focus area for the next version of SAFEgaiter.

One gaiter, many scenarios
Drone operation is one scenario among several. What this test shows is that the same SAFEgaiter can move between roles during a single mission without the user changing kit:
Drone and observation posts: face camouflage during long, static periods in position
Urban and indoor operations: protection against dust in old or damaged buildings
Extended field exercises: a covering that stays comfortable over many consecutive days
